According to the Bible, Jesus died on the cross to deal with humanity’s sin and reconcile people to God. The New Testament gives several connected reasons.
1. To bear the consequences of our sin
The Bible teaches that sin separates humanity from God and brings death.
“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23
Jesus, who Christians believe was without sin, willingly took upon himself the consequences of sin.
1 Peter 2:24 says that Jesus “bore our sins in his body on the tree.”
2. To give his life as a ransom
Jesus himself explained his death this way:
“The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:28
The idea is that Jesus willingly gave his life so that others could be freed from the power and consequence of sin.
3. To reconcile people to God
The cross is also described as the means by which sinners can be brought back into relationship with God.
Romans 5:8–10 says that while humanity was still sinful, Christ died for us, and through his death we are reconciled to God.
So the message isn’t simply “Jesus was killed.” It is that Jesus willingly gave himself for others.
4. Because God loved humanity
One of the clearest explanations is:
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…”
John 3:16
The cross, therefore, is presented in the Bible not merely as an act of punishment, but as an expression of God’s love.
5. Jesus willingly chose the cross
This is very important. Jesus wasn’t simply an unfortunate victim of events.
Before his arrest, he knew what was coming and prayed in Gethsemane. He nevertheless submitted himself to the Father’s will.
Luke 22:42
Jesus also said:
“No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.”
John 10:18
6. The cross was followed by the resurrection
Christian faith doesn’t end with Jesus’ death.
The Bible teaches that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day.
1 Corinthians 15:3–4
Paul says that Christ died for sins, was buried, and was raised.
That is why Christians understand the cross and resurrection together:
Jesus died → Jesus was buried → Jesus rose again → forgiveness and eternal life are offered through him.
In very simple terms
The Bible’s message can be summarized like this:
Humanity sinned → sin separates us from God → Jesus, being without sin, willingly gave his life for sinners → he died on the cross → he rose again → those who turn to God and put their faith in Christ can receive forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
And one of the most powerful things Jesus said from the cross was:
“Father, forgive them.”
— Luke 23:34
So, according to the Bible, Jesus went to the cross because of love—for God and for humanity—and willingly gave his life to save sinners.

That’s right and they killed him for being the Son of God.
